About the metric measurement system:
It is the most commonly used measurement system, it is used as the main one in all of the world countries, except the United States of America, Liberia and Burma.
Origin of some units:

1 metre = distance the light travels in vacuum in 1 / 299 792 458 of a second.

1 hectare = a surface sized 10 000 m2 (100m x 100m) which is equal to 100 ares

1 kilogram = the mass of one cubic decimetre (1 litre) of water

About the Imperial measurement system:
It is mainly used in the United Kingdom, Canada and some countries that used to be a part of the British Empire.
Although it is being used in Great Britain and Canada it is not their main measurement system (it is the metric system).

About the american measurement system (USC):
It is very similar to the imperial system, with the main difference being in units of volume.
Many units they use are closely related to the Imperial system, such as feet, miles and leagues for measuring distance.
